Dry Hair
Hair can become dry for several reasons. In most women, it is the result of our haircare practices, which means it is under our control.
The most common causes include:
- Over-processing with chemicals (relaxers, perms, hair dyes)
- Heat damage (curling irons, blow-dryers, flat irons)
- Not conditioning the hair frequently enough (every week is optimal)
- Utilizing drying hair gels and mousses
- Internal causes (thyroid abnormalities). A thyroid test including a TSH with reflex T4 can be performed.
Routine dry hair care can be treated as follows:
- Wash weekly with a conditioning shampoo. Lather twice.
- After shampooing, apply a conditioner to the hair and allow it to penetrate the hair for 10-15 minutes before rinsing. It is often helpful to cover with a shower cap and sit under a warm hooded dryer.
- Limit the amount of heat applied to the hair. Sitting under a hooded dryer is preferable to blow drying.
- Apply a hair dress or pomade to the hair daily.
- Trim split ends every 6-8 weeks.
